Is there a specific emphasis to the company’s giving?
It’s a pretty broad-based effort. We have upwards of 35 different entities that we support. The major ones are the American Heart Association, Red Cross, and City of Hope. A lot of it is medical and health-related.
Why the focus on the medical side?
My humorous answer for that is that I tend to donate to prevent things that are going to kill me. But on a personal side, my mom died of cancer and I was a really fat child, so the American Heart Association’s efforts to reduce childhood obesity and cancer really appeal to me.
How about on an individual employee basis?
When the Care not Cash program was implemented, everyone in the company went down to help organize monthly events, and we’re talking about doing that again for Habitat for Humanity. We always try to encourage employees to be engaged. Also, we’re a local development company. We’re only in the Bay Area and that’s our entire focus. I think it’s more impactful for employees when you’re helping out in areas where you live.
Anything stand out for you in the company’s philanthropy?
I’ve been to a lot of galas, and organizations like the Heart Association or City of Hope, appropriately, showcase how the money really benefits people. For example, someone with heart disease or who had a tumor will get up and explain how if it weren’t for this research they wouldn’t be here today. And each one of those is always touching. It’s also a way to actually see and hear from someone who has benefited from our donation, versus feeling like the money is disappearing off into a black hole somewhere. When I was honoree for City of Hope, I had a chance to visit a facility in Southern California and meet with doctors to watch what they were doing. That was as memorable as anything, seeing these amazingly smart people who are so passionate and committed to what they’re doing. It humbles you, it really does.
